FRIENDS OF CAPPADOCIA Association

The Association “Friends of Cappadocia” was created by a French priest, Father Raoul Blanchard, a great specialist of Cappadocia and its monuments.  The members of this association are not specialist but they love Cappadocia and wish to participate in the protection of its monuments together with the local authorities, Unesco and Cappadocian inhabitants.

Many Cappadocian monuments are endangered !

The association is trying to save two monuments:

The Red Church (Kizil Kilise, close to Güzelyurt)
The cave church of Meryemana ( in Göreme)

The association has united with Mr. Agiryilmaz  (a Turkish architect and professor) along with his students, to try to save them.

If you love Cappadocia or if you wish to learn about it, and if you wish to help in saving its monumentscome and join us!

SAVE THE RED CHURCH (Kizil Kilise) !

A lonely proud church stands since the 6th century opposite the chain of Melendiz mountains.  It’s the only remaining built church of that period in Cappadocia.  Kizil Kilise is thought to have been built on a property belonging to St Gregory of Naziance, one of the founders of Christianity  in Cappadocia and his tomb may have been in the church.

If nothing is done soon, the church’s dome will fall and the rest of the church will collapse with it.

SAVE MERYEMANA !

Teh Meryeman church is in a huge cone in the Kilçilar valley, close to the Tokali church in Göreme museum.  The church is architecturally splendid and is covered with paintings from the 10th century with scenes of Virgin Mary’s life. The church has been closed since 1976 because the cliff it’s in may collapse.

The Association «Friends of Cappadocia” is trying to save the church by stopping the erosion at the foot of the cone and by reinforcing the base of the cone that is threatening to collapse.  The monument could be saved without spending a huge amount.

Help the association save this world patrimony !
